Saying The PriceHabakkuk 2:1

The Silence After I Say It

This message is for the person who cannot survive the three seconds of quiet after a price and fills them, every time, with a discount nobody asked for

The number goes out, and then there is nothing.

Two seconds. Three. And in that gap, a whole interpretation assembles itself in you, and the interpretation is always the same: that was too much, they think it is too much, they are working out how to say so politely.

So you fill it. And what you fill it with is always a version of less.

I want to look at the silence itself, because I think you have never once actually examined what is happening in it.

Here is what is usually happening. The other person is doing arithmetic. That is nearly always what a pause after a number is. They are checking it against what they have, or against what they expected, or against a conversation they need to have with somebody else this evening.

That takes about three seconds. And then they answer.

You are able to stand in three seconds of quiet, and a silence after a plain sentence has never once been a person disagreeing with you.

And this article will not tell you what to charge or how to work it out. That is arithmetic and it belongs to you, and any stranger with a formula for it wants something from you.

The number is fine. It is the three seconds.

The Silence After I Say It

I will stand upon my watch

There is a verse at the start of Habakkuk where a man decides, deliberately, to take up a position and wait.

I will stand upon my watch, and set me upon the tower, and will watch to see what he will say unto me, and what I shall answer when I am reproved. (Habakkuk 2:1, King James Version)

I will stand upon my watch, and will watch to see what he will say unto me.

That is a man who has spoken, and who has now stopped speaking on purpose, and who has taken up a place to wait in.

You are looking at a man who made the waiting into a position rather than an absence, and standing still after speaking has never once been the same as having nothing more to say. Habakkuk 2:1 says I will stand upon my watch, and set me upon the tower, and the Holy Spirit is the one who put the standing and the waiting in the same sentence.

And the last clause is the honest part, and it is why I chose this verse for you. And what I shall answer when I am reproved.

He is not certain it will go well. He is expecting, possibly, to be corrected, and he takes up his position anyway.

You have permission to wait without knowing which way it goes, and a person braced for a hard answer has never once been disqualified from standing there. The Holy Spirit is the one who holds somebody in a waiting place, and it is written in Habakkuk 2:1 with the possibility of being reproved sitting right there in it.

What you are actually doing in the gap

Let me name what the filling is, because it is not weakness and it is not a failure of nerve.

Three seconds of quiet with another person is one of the most uncomfortable things in ordinary life. Almost everybody fills it. In most conversations that is harmless and even kind.

Here it is not harmless, because the only material available to fill it with is the thing you just said, and the only way to change a number you just said is downward.

You are reaching for the nearest thing to hand, and an instinct to be helpful has never once been the same thing as a decision about money. The written word has a man deliberately choose a place to stand and wait in, and the Spirit of God is the one who makes that kind of chosen stillness possible.

And there is a second cost, which is quieter and worse.

When you fill the gap, you never find out what they were going to say. You have been doing this for years, which means you have almost no data. You genuinely do not know how people react to your price, because you have never once let one land.

You are missing the answer every single time, and a person who fills the pause has never once heard what was coming. The Holy Spirit is the one who gives a person the steadiness to find out, and Habakkuk 2:1 has a man watching specifically to see what will be said to him.

Give the silence something to do

So the assignment, with a practical piece of help in it.

Say your price out loud to yourself three times, then say it to the next person who asks.

And for the silence, the trick is not willpower. It is having a job.

Pick something for your mouth and your eyes to do for three seconds. Count. Look at the thing being discussed rather than at the person's face. Take a drink if there is one. Breathe out slowly, which takes about four seconds on its own and is invisible.

You are able to give three seconds a task, and a small physical job has never once failed where trying harder had already failed. The Spirit of God is the one who meets a person in something as ordinary as a breath, and the written word turns waiting into a posture rather than an emptiness.

And the second half is harder and is the real one: whatever they say at the end of the three seconds, let it be the first thing you respond to.

Not your interpretation of the pause. The actual sentence they say.

You are able to answer a sentence instead of a silence, and words somebody said out loud have never once been less reliable than a gap you filled in yourself. The Holy Spirit is the one who keeps a person with what is actually there, and it is written in Habakkuk 2:1 that the man was watching to see what would be said to him.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over somebody who has never once let a price land.

You are able to stand in three seconds of quiet, and a silence after a plain sentence has never once been a person disagreeing with you. I am not telling you what to charge and I will not hand you a way of working it out, because that is arithmetic and it stays yours. Habakkuk 2:1 says I will stand upon my watch, and will watch to see what he will say unto me, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my steadiness who holds a person in a waiting place.

And this one, which is the word I actually came with:

You have been missing the answer every single time, and a gap you filled yourself has never once told you what the other person was going to say. The Spirit of God gives a person the stillness to find out, and it is written in Habakkuk 2:1 that the man stood there expecting he might be reproved and stood there anyway.

Three times out loud. Then give the silence a job.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Three seconds, you have never once been a disagreement. Habakkuk 2:1 puts a man on his watch and on the tower, so by the Holy Spirit I say the number and give the silence a job, in the name of Jesus.
  2. Version I assemble in the pause, you were never what they said. The written word has a man take up a place to hear the answer, and by the Holy Spirit I wait and I answer the real sentence.
  3. Father, You let a man take up a position and wait, knowing he might be corrected. Your word in Habakkuk 2:1 sets him on the tower to hear the answer, so by Your Spirit I stop filling the quiet with less than I said.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
