I Said It Too Quietly

You said it and she said, sorry, what.

And you had to say it again, and the second time it came out even worse, because now it was not a price any more, it was a thing being repeated under examination.

I want to go into the half second before the first one, because that is where the whole event happens.

Something in your throat closes slightly. The volume comes down. And the last few words, which are the ones carrying the actual number, come out at about half the strength of the rest of the sentence.

That is not shyness in general. You can talk. You are fine in a group. It happens on that one specific phrase.

You are allowed to be heard the first time, and a price said at ordinary volume has never once been an aggressive thing to say.

And let me be clear about what this article is not doing, because you have probably been sold enough already for somebody your age.

I am not going to tell you what to charge. I am not going to give you a way to work it out. That is arithmetic, it belongs to you, and any stranger with a formula wants something.

This is about the volume, and the volume is a bigger part of the problem than the number is.

I have set my face like a flint

There is a line in Isaiah about a face being set, and the reason given for it is worth reading slowly.

For the Lord GOD will help me; therefore shall I not be confounded: therefore have I set my face like a flint, and I know that I shall not be ashamed. (Isaiah 50:7, King James Version)

Therefore have I set my face like a flint.

Flint is not a soft stone and it does not move when it is pressed. But look at what comes before the therefore, because that is the whole engine of the verse.

For the Lord GOD will help me. The setting of the face is the second thing. It rests on something.

You have been trying to produce steadiness out of nothing, and a set face has never once been asked to hold itself up in that verse. Isaiah 50:7 puts the help first and the flint afterward, and the Holy Spirit is the one doing the helping that the setting rests on.

And there is one more word in it that matters for a person who has been asked to repeat themselves. Confounded.

To be confounded is to be thrown, to lose the thread, to have the thing come apart in your mouth. That is precisely what happens when somebody says sorry, what.

You are described in a verse that names the exact thing that happens to you, and being thrown by a question has never once been outside what scripture takes seriously. The Holy Spirit is the one who steadies a person mid sentence, and it is written in Isaiah 50:7 that the not being confounded comes from the help rather than from the nerve.

What the quiet actually says

Let me tell you what the other person experiences, because it is not what you think.

She does not hear a shy person. She hears a sentence that trailed off, and a sentence that trails off sounds like a sentence the speaker was not sure about.

So she asks again. And the asking again is not a challenge, it is genuinely just that she did not catch it, but by then your body has read it as a challenge and the second delivery is worse.

You are being asked a practical question and hearing a verdict, and somebody saying sorry, what has never once been the same as somebody objecting. The written word names being confounded as a real thing rather than a weakness, and the Spirit of God is the one who holds a person steady in the second half of a sentence.

And here is the thing about volume that nobody tells young people.

Volume is not aggression. Volume is clarity. The difference between a price said at ordinary speaking volume and one said quietly is not the difference between rude and polite. It is the difference between heard and not heard.

You are able to be heard without being hard, and ordinary volume has never once been the same thing as force. The Holy Spirit is the one who gives a person an ordinary voice, and Isaiah 50:7 sets a face like flint without one word about raising it.

Practice the end of the sentence

So the assignment, and there is a specific technique in it because this one is genuinely mechanical.

Say your price out loud to yourself three times, then say it to the next person who asks.

And the rule is: practice the last three words at the same volume as the first three.

Most people who do this are fine until the number and then drop. So say the whole sentence and deliberately push the end up to match the beginning. It will feel like shouting. It will not be shouting. Record it on your phone once if you want proof.

You are able to say the end of a sentence as loudly as the start of it, and a level voice has never once come across as a raised one. The Spirit of God is the one who steadies a person in the half second where it usually goes, and the written word puts the help before the flint.

And there is a second rule that will help more than anything else. Put the number in the middle of the sentence, not at the end.

It comes to this, and that covers everything. Rather than: so it would be, um, about this. A number in the middle gets carried by the words after it and does not have to survive on its own.

You are able to move a number into the middle of a sentence, and a small change in where a word sits has never once been too slight a thing to make a difference. The Holy Spirit is the one who is with somebody practicing in a kitchen, and it is written in Isaiah 50:7 that a person is kept from being confounded by help and not by effort.
