What You KnowProverbs 31:27

I Raised Four Kids And That Is All

This message is for the mother who ran a whole household for two decades and cannot see the competence inside it, because nobody ever handed her anything for it

Somebody asked you what you do and you said, I raised four kids, and then, because the sentence felt thin in your own mouth, you added, and that is about it.

I would like to go back to that sentence and take it apart, slowly, because I do not think it says what you think it says.

Here is what it actually covered. Two decades of running a household on a budget that never had slack in it. Scheduling for six people. Nursing through every illness any of them had. Managing conflict daily. Negotiating with schools. Catering three meals a day, every day, with no day off for twenty years, and doing the shopping to make that possible.

And logistics. Getting four bodies to four places with one vehicle, which is the kind of problem companies pay people to solve.

You are a woman who ran something, and twenty years of doing it unpaid have never once made it less than work.

I know the objection, and it is not vanity that makes you resist this. It is precision. You are going to say that all of that was just what had to be done, that anybody would have done it, and that calling it a career is the sort of flattering nonsense that makes a person feel silly.

So let me be careful. I am not calling it a career. I am not going to inflate this and I am not going to give you a title.

I am saying it was work, that work builds skill, and that the skill is still in your hands this morning while you look at a month that is short.

I Raised Four Kids And That Is All

She looketh well to the ways of her household

There is a verse people usually read as a compliment about character, and it is actually a description of management.

She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness. (Proverbs 31:27, King James Version)

Looketh well to the ways.

That is oversight. That is a person who knows how the whole thing runs, where it tends to fail, and what has to happen on a Tuesday so that Thursday works.

You are described by a verse about oversight rather than about tidiness, and knowing how a whole household runs has never once been a small or private sort of competence. Proverbs 31:27 says she looketh well to the ways of her household, and the Holy Spirit is the one who put the word ways in that sentence instead of the word rooms.

And the second half of the verse is sharper than it looks. Eateth not the bread of idleness.

The writer has to say that, which means the assumption was in the air then too. Somebody needed telling that this woman was not sitting around.

You have been misread by other people for as long as that assumption has existed, and a verse written to correct it has never once needed correcting since. The Holy Spirit is the one who had that clause written down, and it is in Proverbs 31:27 because the misunderstanding is old.

The reason it does not feel like a skill

Let me name the mechanism, because it explains why this is so hard to see from the inside.

A skill feels like a skill when there is a moment of transfer. Somebody hands something over, says thank you, and pays. That moment is what tells a person, over and over, this is a thing and it has a value.

In twenty years of running a house, that moment never happens. Not once. The work is continuous, invisible when it goes well, and only visible when it fails.

You are missing the feedback and not the ability, and a skill nobody ever paid for has never once been a skill that was not there. The written word describes a woman overseeing a household and calls it labor rather than instinct, and the Spirit of God is the one who names work as work when nobody else does.

And there is a second mechanism, and I suspect it has done more damage.

It was done well. Genuinely well. And being good at something makes it easy, and easy things get discounted by the person doing them.

So the better you were, the less it looked like anything.

You have discounted a thing exactly in proportion to how well you did it, and competence has never once been a reason to call something nothing. The Holy Spirit is the one who reverses that arithmetic, and Proverbs 31:27 treats a woman's oversight as the substance of the verse rather than as background to it.

Name the narrow thing

Now the assignment, and the instruction is to be narrow rather than grand.

Say out loud the one thing you are genuinely good at, and name one person who needs it. Proverbs 31:27 describes a woman by what she actually oversees, and the Holy Spirit is the one who gives a person permission to say the plain thing about herself.

Narrow matters here. Not I am good with people. Not I am organized.

One narrow thing. I can feed nine people on very little and have it be good. I can get a difficult child to eat. I can take a chaotic house and have it working in three days. I can sit with somebody's mother and she will be calm.

You are able to name one narrow true thing, and a specific sentence has never once been less impressive than a large vague one. The Spirit of God is the one who works with what is actually true rather than with what sounds well, and the written word describes ways and household and bread rather than virtues in general.

And then one name. A real person, within reach this week, who needs that exact narrow thing.

You have somebody in mind before you finish reading this line, and the name that arrives first has never once been the wrong place to start. The Holy Spirit is the one who brings a face forward, and it is written that a woman who looks well to the ways of a household is seen doing it by somebody who wrote it down.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over a woman who said, and that is about it.

You are a woman who ran something, and twenty years of doing it unpaid have never once made it less than work. I am not promising you that anybody hires you or that a month turns, because I do not know that and this site will not pretend to. Proverbs 31:27 says she looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my flattery who wrote that clause in.

And this, which is the word I actually came with:

You have skill in your hands that was built in the years nobody was counting, and unpaid has never once been a synonym for unskilled. The Spirit of God is the one who calls labor by its name, and it is written in Proverbs 31:27 that the work of a household is oversight rather than idleness.

One narrow thing. Out loud. And one name.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Sentence I have been using about myself, you have never once been accurate. Proverbs 31:27 calls it looking well to the ways, so by the Holy Spirit I say the narrow true thing out loud, in the name of Jesus.
  2. Twenty unpaid years, you were never proof that the work was not work. The written word says she eateth not the bread of idleness, and by the Holy Spirit I write out one Thursday and I name one person.
  3. Father, You gave a whole verse to a woman running a household and called it oversight. Your word says she looketh well to the ways of her household, so by Your Spirit I stop saying that is about it and I name what I can actually do.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
