Thirty Years and It Does Not Count

There is a thing you do that you have stopped seeing.

It is the thing people ring you about. The thing that, when somebody else attempts it, you find yourself watching with a slight wince because they are going about it the long way. The thing you could do tired, in bad light, while thinking about something else.

And if I asked you what your skills were, you would not mention it, because it does not feel like a skill. It feels like a description of you.

That is what thirty years does. It converts an ability into a personality, and personalities are not things anybody imagines charging for.

So a person who is genuinely short of money can sit in a kitchen with a real, marketable, decades-deep competence in their hands and honestly conclude that they have nothing to offer.

You are holding a real skill, and thirty years of doing one thing well has never once been a hobby.

God names a metalworker specifically

There is a passage in 1 Kings, in the middle of the building of the temple, where the text stops and describes one man.

He was a widow's son of the tribe of Naphtali, and his father was a man of Tyre, a worker in brass: and he was filled with wisdom, and understanding, and cunning to work all works in brass. (1 Kings 7:14, King James Version)

Filled with wisdom, and understanding, and cunning to work all works in brass.

Read what is being said there. Those are enormous words. Wisdom and understanding are the words used about the fear of the Lord and about the ordering of a life, and here they are attached to somebody's ability to work metal.

The text does not treat his craft as the practical part of the project while the spiritual part happened elsewhere. It says he was filled, which is the language used elsewhere about the Spirit, and it says it about brass.

You have a trade that the written word puts inside the same sentence as wisdom, and a skill in the hands has never once been the lower half of that list. First Kings 7:14 says filled with wisdom, and understanding, and cunning to work all works in brass, and the Holy Spirit is the one who refused to rank them.

First Kings 7:14 puts a trade skill in the same sentence as wisdom and understanding without any embarrassment, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets that reach somebody who thinks their own competence is too ordinary to name.

You are carrying something Scripture is willing to call wisdom, and it has never once been too ordinary to count. First Kings 7:14 attaches wisdom and understanding to metalwork without apology, and the Holy Spirit is the one who returns a person's own ability to them as something real.

Not a new field

I want to say clearly what this article is not, because the advice you have probably been given goes the other way, and because 1 Kings 7:14 sends nobody off to start again somewhere else and the Holy Spirit did not either.

I am not suggesting a course. Not a qualification, not a new trade, not a different field. Not because those are bad, but because they are a long road and you are short this month, and because they all begin from the premise that what you already have is insufficient.

That premise is the thing I am arguing with.

You have been offered a long road that begins by calling what is already in your hands insufficient, and thirty years of doing one thing well has never once been a starting deficit. The written word describes a man who was sent for because of what he could already do, and the Holy Spirit is the one who works with what is there rather than with what is next.

You do not need to become somebody else in order to be paid. Hiram was not sent to learn something new. He was already, before anybody in that story needed him, a man who could work brass, and the moment the need arose he was who was sent for.

First Kings 7:14 describes a skill that already existed and was simply recognized, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes recognition feel like enough when a person has been assuming they need reinvention.

You are not required to become something else, and the ability has never once needed replacing. The written word describes a craftsman who was already what he was before he was ever needed, and the Spirit of God is the one who makes an existing skill visible to the person holding it.

Say it out loud, immodestly

Here is the assignment, and the reason it is harder than it sounds.

Say out loud the one thing you are genuinely good at. First Kings 7:14 states a man’s competence flatly, and the Holy Spirit is the one who gives a person permission to do the same. Not I am all right at. Not I can usually manage. The actual sentence: I am good at this.

You will want to soften it. Everybody does, and the softening is exactly what has kept this invisible for thirty years, because a thing described modestly cannot be offered to anybody with any confidence, and a thing offered without confidence does not get taken up.

Then name one person who needs it. Not a market. One person, with a name, who you know would benefit from it this month.

First Kings 7:14 states a man's competence flatly and without hedging, and the Holy Spirit is the one who can get a plain sentence out of somebody who has spent decades qualifying themselves.

You are able to say it plainly, and the modesty has never once served anybody. First Kings 7:14 records what a man could do without one softening word attached, and the Spirit of God is the one who makes an unhedged sentence possible.
