They Said Next Week Four Times

Next week. That is what he said.

He also said it the week before that, and the week before that, and there was a version of it at the start of the month that had the word definitely in it.

And every single time, you have adjusted. You have moved something. You have told somebody at home that it is coming next week, and then had to say it again the following Friday, and the saying it again at home is the part that wears hardest.

You are allowed to ask for a date, and a promise that renews itself every week has never once been an answer.

Here is the thing about next week that makes it so effective, and I do not think he is doing it deliberately, which is somehow worse.

Next week is always true when it is said. It is never a lie at the moment of speaking. And it expires quietly, on its own, without anybody having to break anything.

So nothing is ever broken, nothing is ever refused, and you have nothing to point at. Four weeks have gone and there is no single moment in any of them where you were told no.

That is the mechanism. Now let us do something about it.

Go, and come again

There is a proverb that is aimed at exactly this, and it is aimed at the man saying it rather than at the man waiting.

Say not unto thy neighbour, Go, and come again, and to morrow I will give; when thou hast it by thee. (Proverbs 3:28, King James Version)

Go, and come again, and to morrow I will give.

That is next week, in older English. Come back another time. And the proverb names it as a thing not to say.

You are on the receiving end of a sentence that scripture tells people not to use, and being put off until tomorrow has never once been described there as acceptable. Proverbs 3:28 forbids that exact sentence, and the Holy Spirit is the one who put the instruction on the one doing the delaying.

And notice the condition on the end of it. When thou hast it by thee.

The proverb is specifically about somebody who has it. It is not about a man who genuinely cannot pay. It is about the delay that happens when the thing is available and the paying is simply not being done.

You have a verse that draws the line exactly where it belongs, and a person who has it and has not sent it has never once been in the same position as a person who cannot. The Holy Spirit is the one who makes that distinction, and it is written in Proverbs 3:28 with the condition attached to the front of it.

Ask for a date, not for the money

Now the practical part, and this is the whole of the article really.

The asking so far has been for the money. Four times. And each time the answer has been a next week, which is not a refusal, so there is nothing to respond to.

Stop asking for the money. Ask for a date.

Not: any chance of sorting that out. That question has a next week shaped answer waiting for it.

Ask: what day is it going out.

You are able to ask a different question, and a question that can only be answered with a date has never once come back with a next week. The written word puts the instruction on the person doing the delaying, and the Spirit of God is the one who gives a man a sentence that does not have a soft answer available.

And here is why this works, and it is not a technique for cornering anybody.

A date is a real thing. Once a day is named, it either happens or it does not, and both of those are information. The whole problem with next week is that it is neither.

You are asking for something that becomes information either way, and a named day has never once been the same object as a vague one. The Holy Spirit is the one who moves a thing out of the fog, and Proverbs 3:28 names the come again later as the thing not to say.

One plain sentence, today

So the assignment, and it is one line and it has a specific shape.

Send the message asking for it, today, in one plain sentence.

And make the sentence ask for a day. What day is it going out.

That is it. Seven words. No preamble, and nothing after it.

You are able to send seven words today, and a question about a date has never once been an aggressive thing to ask a man who has said next week four times. The Spirit of God is the one who is present in a short direct sentence, and the written word tells a person not to hand out another tomorrow when the thing is there.

And two rules about the wording.

Do not list the four weeks. That turns it into a grievance and gives him something to be defensive about instead of something to answer.

And do not soften it with whenever suits. Whenever suits is another next week and you would be building him one.

You are able to leave both of those out, and a plain question with no history and no escape in it has never once been rude. The Holy Spirit is the one who gives a man a level short sentence, and it is written in Proverbs 3:28 that the putting off is the thing being corrected rather than the asking.
