The Uniform

The job is fine. You can do the job.

It is the clothes.

It is the fifteen minutes between the car and the door, and the possibility of somebody from before seeing you in it, and the particular horror of the school gate at the wrong time of day.

And it sounds shallow when you say it out loud, which is why you have not said it out loud, and that is the reason this article exists.

You are not what you are wearing, and a set of work clothes has never once been a statement about a person.

Let me say straight away that this is not shallow. It is the opposite of shallow.

Clothes are the fastest signal humans have. A person reads them before they read a face. That is not vanity, it is how the species works, and it is exactly why a uniform lands the way it does on somebody who has spent twenty years being read a different way.

So the flinch is not silliness. It is an accurate read of a real social mechanism, and I am not going to insult you by calling it nothing.

What I would like to do instead is put something underneath it.

And God made coats of skins

There is a verse right at the beginning that people usually hurry past on the way to the harder part of the chapter.

Unto Adam also and to his wife did the LORD God make coats of skins, and clothed them. (Genesis 3:21, King James Version)

Did the LORD God make coats of skins, and clothed them.

He made them. That is a verse where God does tailoring, at the worst moment in the story, for two people who had just ruined everything.

You are in a book where the first clothes anybody wore were made by God Himself, and a garment has never once been beneath the attention of the one who made the first ones. Genesis 3:21 says did the LORD God make coats of skins, and clothed them, and the Holy Spirit is the one who kept that detail rather than leaving it out.

And notice what the clothes were for. They were practical. Skins, for weather, for a world that had just got harder.

They were not a statement. They were not a rank. They were what two people needed to be able to go out and work in a world that now required work.

You have clothes that exist to let a body do a job, and a practical garment has never once been a description of the person inside it. The Holy Spirit is the one who put the first coats on a working pair, and it is written in Genesis 3:21 at the exact point where the working began.

What people actually read

Now let me take the dread apart, because it is more specific than it has ever been allowed to be.

It is not being seen. It is being seen by somebody who knew you when, and having them do the arithmetic in their head, and seeing the tiny adjustment their face makes while they do it.

That adjustment is real. Some faces will make it. I am not going to tell you they will not.

You are bracing for something that will occasionally actually happen, and a moment that genuinely occurs has never once been a moment that decides anything. The written word has God dress two people at the worst hour of their lives, and the Spirit of God is the one who is present in the fifteen minutes between a car and a door.

And here is what I would put beside it.

The face that adjusts is doing something about itself, not about you. It is a person reorganizing a category, and the category is theirs and they will have it sorted by Thursday.

What they will remember about that encounter, a year later, is nothing. Genuinely nothing. People do not carry other people's job changes around.

You are the only one who will be keeping a record of it, and a moment nobody else will remember has never once been worth fifteen minutes of dread in a parking lot. The Holy Spirit is the one who returns a thing to its actual size, and Genesis 3:21 has clothing handed to people who needed to be able to go out and work.

Take it, and say it in the clothes

So the assignment, and there is something specific about how to do the second half.

Take the shift, and tell one person plainly what you are doing and why. Genesis 3:21 has God make the first working clothes with His own hands, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is present while a person says out loud what they have taken on.

And if it can be done, say it to somebody while you are actually wearing it.

That is not a stunt. It is the fastest way through, because the thing you are dreading is a combination of the clothes and a face, and doing the two together once, on purpose, with somebody safe, takes most of the charge out of it.

You are able to be seen once on purpose by somebody you choose, and a thing done deliberately has never once cost what the same thing costs when it happens by accident. The Spirit of God is the one who goes with a person out of a door, and the written word has the clothes given at the start of the working rather than as a punishment inside it.

And do not change in the car. I know why you have been doing it. It costs you twenty minutes a day and it teaches your own body, twice a day, that there is something to hide.

You are able to walk out of your own door in it, and a person dressed for their own work has never once had anything to conceal. The Holy Spirit is the one who is with somebody in a hallway at six in the morning, and it is written in Genesis 3:21 that God did the clothing Himself.
