The Quiet Season Came Early

It always goes quiet. You have known that since your first year.

What has never happened before is it going quiet in the second week of the month it usually picks up in.

And the thing that is unsettling is not the money yet. It is that the calendar in your head, the one you have run your whole working life by, has just done something it has never done.

You are not in a season that has stopped, and a quiet stretch arriving early has never once meant the pattern had ended.

Let me name what the calendar actually was, because I think it has been doing more work than you realized.

It was not a schedule. It was a promise you made to yourself, silently, every year: it will be thin here, and then it will come back there, and I can get through the thin bit because I know where the other end of it is.

The knowing where the other end is was the whole thing. That was what made the lean weeks survivable.

And this year the other end has moved, and nobody has told you where to.

While the earth remaineth

There is a verse at the end of the flood account that is one of the plainest promises in scripture, and it is about exactly this.

While the earth remaineth, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease. (Genesis 8:22, King James Version)

Seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter.

Six things in three pairs, and the promise is about the pattern rather than about any particular year.

You are standing inside a promise made about the rhythm itself, and one season arriving off its usual date has never once been the rhythm failing. Genesis 8:22 says seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and the Holy Spirit is the one who put the guarantee on the pattern.

And here is what the verse does not say, and it matters for a working man.

It does not say the seasons arrive on the same date. It does not say any particular year is like the last one. Farmers have known for thousands of years that some years are early and some are late and some are strange.

What it says is that they do not cease.

You have a guarantee about continuation and not about timing, and an early season has never once been outside what that verse covers. The Holy Spirit is the one who holds a person through a year that does not match the last one, and it is written in Genesis 8:22 about the pattern rather than about the calendar.

What the early part is actually costing

Now let me get practical, because the spiritual half of this does not pay anything and I am not going to pretend it does.

The money problem is straightforward: some weeks arrived that you had not built for.

But there is a second problem, and I think it is the larger one this week, and it is about what a man does with an unexpected empty stretch.

A known quiet season gets used. Men in your trade fix things, service things, get to the jobs that never happen in the busy months. An unexpected one does not get used, because it arrives as a shock and the first two weeks go on being unsettled.

You have a stretch of days that is being spent on being surprised, and an unplanned quiet week has never once been less usable than a planned one. The written word guarantees the continuing of the pattern rather than its punctuality, and the Spirit of God is the one who steadies a man in a year that has gone off its shape.

And there is one more thing, and it is the thing I would most want a man in your position to hear.

You have been through the quiet part many times. Not this exact version of it. But the actual skill of getting through a thin stretch is in your hands already, and it was built in about nine previous ones.

You have done this before in a different arrangement, and an unfamiliar shape has never once meant unfamiliar work. The Holy Spirit is the one who brings a man's own experience back into view, and Genesis 8:22 puts the guarantee on something that has already happened many times over.

Say what came in, out loud

So the assignment, and on a week like yours it is going to feel almost insulting until you do it.

Name out loud what came in this week, however small, and thank God for it by name.

However small is the operative phrase. In a quiet week, the list is short, and a short list said out loud is a very different experience from a short list looked at on a screen.

You are able to say a short list out loud, and a small week named piece by piece has never once sounded the same as a small week counted. The Spirit of God is the one who is present in a yard at the end of an ordinary day, and the written word puts its guarantee on the pattern continuing rather than on a particular week being full.

And say it out loud even if what came in was one thing. Especially then.

A week with one thing in it is a week with one thing in it, and calling it nothing is not honesty, it is rounding down.

You are able to name one thing rather than rounding it to nothing, and a single item said out loud has never once been the same as an empty week. The Holy Spirit is the one who is present while a man says a short list to nobody in a yard, and it is written in Genesis 8:22 that the pattern does not cease.
