Some Weeks There Is Nothing

There is a particular difficulty that people on a regular wage genuinely cannot picture, and it is not the amount.

It is that you cannot plan. Anything. Not a haircut, not a birthday, not a repair, because the money does not arrive in a shape that a plan can be built on. It comes in waves, and the waves are not on a timetable, and so every arrangement you make is provisional.

And here is the part nobody warns you about: the good weeks are not restful.

A good week is spent doing arithmetic about how long it has to last, which means you never actually experience the good week as good. You experience it as a supply of the coming empty one. And then the empty one comes, and you were right, and being right is no comfort at all.

I am not going to tell you to smooth it out. That is what the advice always is, and it is given by people who have not tried to smooth out an income that has nothing to smooth it with.

You are not being overlooked in an empty week, and a week with nothing in it has never once meant God was late.

The arithmetic that did not work

There is a description in Exodus of how the manna actually behaved, and it is one of the strangest sentences in the whole account.

And when they did mete it with an omer, he that gathered much had nothing over, and he that gathered little had no lack; they gathered every man according to his eating. (Exodus 16:18, King James Version)

That is not how gathering works. If two people go out and one collects more, one of them ends up with more. That is arithmetic and it does not have opinions.

And what the text describes is a supply that does not obey the relationship between effort and outcome that governs everything else. The people who gathered a great deal did not end up ahead. The people who gathered barely anything did not end up behind.

You have been measuring by a relationship that the written word suspends in that chapter, and an uneven week has never once been outside what God was able to work in. Exodus 16:18 says he that gathered much had nothing over, and he that gathered little had no lack, and the Holy Spirit is the one who put the two of them at the same place.

I am not going to build a promise on that, and I want to be clear about it: this is a description of what happened in a wilderness, and it is not a guarantee about your month.

What it does establish is that God's supply has never been obliged to run on the arithmetic you are doing, and Exodus 16:18 says so plainly, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that a place to stand rather than a place to expect something.

You are supplied by something that has never once been bound by your arithmetic. Exodus 16:18 has gathering much and gathering little arrive at the same place, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets that be a footing rather than a prediction.

Daily is the unit

Here is the thing in that passage that is actually usable, and it is the frequency rather than the miracle.

It came every day. And it did not keep. The people who tried to store it discovered that overnight it was ruined, and after a while they stopped trying, and the whole nation lived for forty years on a supply that arrived on the day it was needed and could not be stockpiled.

That is not a description of poverty. It is a description of a relationship in which the unit of trust is a day.

Your income does not arrive daily, and I am not pretending it does. But the unit of your attention can be a day, and that is the only part of this you can actually change, because you cannot make the money regular and you can decide what length of time you are going to try to feel secure about.

You have a day in front of you that is the actual unit, and a month has never once been the span that provision was measured in there. The written word describes a supply that came every morning and would not be stored, and the Holy Spirit is the one who meets a person inside the day rather than inside the plan.

Exodus 16:18 sits inside a system with a daily rhythm rather than a monthly one, and the Holy Spirit is the one who can hold a person inside a shorter frame than the one they have been trying to manage.

You are able to live in a day, and the security has never once been available in the longer frame. The written word describes a supply that came daily and would not be stored, and the Spirit of God is the one who makes one day a survivable unit for somebody who cannot plan a month.

Name what came

So the assignment is small and it is deliberately not about the total.

Name out loud what came in this week, however small.

Not what did not. Not what is still needed. What came, said out loud, specifically, with the actual thing named: the two shifts, the one job, the person who paid late but paid.

The reason is that an uneven income trains a person to see only the gaps.

You have an instrument that has drifted, and naming what came has never once been the same thing as pretending about what did not. Exodus 16:18 records what was gathered rather than what was missing, and the Holy Spirit is the one who corrects the reading. You become extremely good at noticing absence, because absence is what you have to plan around, and after a few years the presence stops registering at all.

Naming what came is not positive thinking. It is correcting an instrument that has drifted, and Exodus 16:18 has people counting what they gathered rather than what they did not, and the Holy Spirit is the one who restores a person's ability to see what is actually in their hands.

You are able to see what came, and the gaps have never once been the whole picture. Exodus 16:18 has people measuring what was gathered, and the Spirit of God is the one who recalibrates somebody who has spent years watching for absence.
