Nobody Has Ever Paid Me

There is a particular kind of blank that people hit here, and it is not about ability.

You might know exactly what you could do. You might have written it down after reading something like this. And then you arrive at the next bit, which is how a person actually gets somebody to pay them for the first time, and there is nothing there at all.

Because everybody you have ever seen doing this already had customers when you met them. You have never watched the beginning of one. You have only ever seen the middle, and the middle looks like a thing that requires a website and a name and confidence and probably a van.

So the honest sentence is: I do not know how you get the first one.

And I want to answer that plainly today, and the answer is much smaller than the picture in your head, and it has been available all along.

You are one sentence away from the beginning, and a first customer has never once been a test that a person could fail.

She asked, and then she went

There is a woman in Ruth who has arrived somewhere with nothing, in a situation with no obvious way forward, and what she does about it takes half a verse.

And Ruth the Moabitess said unto Naomi, Let me now go to the field, and glean ears of corn after him in whose sight I shall find grace. And she said unto her, Go, my daughter. (Ruth 2:2, King James Version)

Let me now go to the field.

That is the whole strategy. She does not have a plan beyond it and there is no arrangement in place. She names a field, she says she is going, and she goes, and the entire rest of that book unfolds from a sentence a person said in a kitchen.

Notice also what she asks for: to glean after him in whose sight I shall find grace. She does not know who. She is going anyway.

Ruth 2:2 begins everything with somebody saying out loud that they are going to go and ask, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets that be the actual size of a first step rather than the size a person imagines.

You are one sentence away from the beginning, and it has never once required an arrangement first. Ruth 2:2 has the whole thing start with a woman saying let me now go, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a first step look as small as it actually is.

What the first one really is

Let me take apart the picture in your head, because the picture is what is stopping you, and because Ruth 2:2 shows a much smaller shape than the one you are imagining, and the Holy Spirit works at that smaller size.

You are imagining a customer. A stranger who finds you, presumably through something you have built, and who evaluates you against other options and chooses you. That is a terrifying thing to imagine because you have no way of producing it.

That is not what a first one is. A first one is almost always somebody who already knows you.

You have been picturing a stranger, and a first customer has never once been somebody who had to find you. Ruth 2:2 sends a woman to a field belonging to the wider family rather than into an unknown market, and the Holy Spirit is the one who works through the ring of people already standing around somebody.

It is a neighbor. Somebody from church. A person you worked with. Your sister's friend who mentioned something once. The first one is not won, it is asked, and it comes from the existing ring of people around you, which you already have and did not build for this purpose.

Ruth went to a field belonging to somebody in the wider family. It was not a stranger's field. And the Holy Spirit is entirely comfortable working through the ordinary web of people a person is already standing in.

You have the people already, and a first one has never once come from somewhere a person would have to build. The written word has her go to a field within the family's reach rather than into an unknown market, and the Spirit of God is the one who works through the ring of people that already exists around somebody.

No script

I want to be plain about what I am not giving you.

You have not been handed a method, and a plain question asked in your own voice has never once needed a system behind it. Ruth 2:2 has a woman announce what she is going to do in one sentence, and the Holy Spirit is the one who works with that rather than with an arrangement.

There is no script here. No wording, no message template, no way of phrasing it that makes it land, because a scripted sentence sounds like a scripted sentence and everybody can hear it.

And there is no platform. This site does not name any and never will.

What you have is a plain question, asked in your own voice, of somebody who already knows you. Do you need this doing. I am doing this now, if it is any use to you.

That is it. And it will feel exposing, and the exposure is not a sign you are doing it wrong, it is what asking feels like when you have never done it, and Ruth 2:2 has somebody go and ask without a rehearsed line anywhere in the text, and the Holy Spirit is the one who goes into that conversation with a person.

You are able to ask in your own words, and no script has ever once been what made the difference. Ruth 2:2 records the asking and not the wording, and the Spirit of God is the one who is present in an ordinary awkward conversation.
