My Father Did This And I Swore I Would Not

You were nineteen when you decided.

You watched him come in at the end of a day. You saw what it did to his back and his hands and the particular way he sat down. And you made a vow, silently, the way young men do, and the vow was: not me.

And you did it. You got out. Twenty two years somewhere else.

And now here you are, in the same trade, in the same kind of boots, and the thing in your chest is not disappointment about money. It is something much older and much worse than that.

It feels like the whole thing was a circle.

You are standing in a line and not going round in a circle, and doing what your father did has never once been the same as having got nowhere.

Let me deal with the vow first, because it is the part that is actually doing the damage.

A nineteen year old made that vow, and he made it with the information a nineteen year old has, which is: the tiredness, the hands, the sitting down.

What he did not have was the other side of it. Whether the work meant anything to your father. Whether there were parts of it he was proud of. What he thought about while he was doing it.

Nineteen year olds do not have that information about their fathers. Nobody does at nineteen.

Turn the heart of the fathers to the children

There is the last verse of the Old Testament, and it is about exactly this relationship, and it is worth reading slowly.

And he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers, lest I come and smite the earth with a curse. (Malachi 4:6, King James Version)

It is a two directional thing, and the whole weight of the last sentence in that testament rests on it not being broken.

You are inside the one relationship the Old Testament chose to end on, and a heart turned back toward a father has never once been a small matter in scripture. Malachi 4:6 says and the heart of the children to their fathers, and the Holy Spirit is the one who put that at the very end rather than somewhere in the middle.

And notice what is not there. There is nothing in that verse about becoming your father or not becoming him.

It is about the heart turning. Which is a different thing entirely from repeating a life or escaping one, and it is the only thing that verse asks for.

You have been measuring against a standard the verse never sets, and whether a man ends up in his father's trade has never once been the thing scripture was watching. The Holy Spirit is the one who turns a heart, and it is written in Malachi 4:6 about direction rather than about occupation.

A circle and a line are not the same shape

Let me get at the shape of it, because I think the picture in your head is wrong and pictures matter.

A circle means arriving back where you started with nothing gained.

But this is not where he was. He did that work in a different decade, with different tools, without twenty two years of something else in his hands, and without anybody having chosen it at forty three the way it has been chosen now.

It is the same trade. It is not the same life, and those are two different sentences.

You are doing a job he did and living a life he did not, and the same trade has never once meant the same life. The written word cares about the direction of a heart rather than the repetition of a job, and the Spirit of God is the one who tells a line from a circle.

And here is the part I would actually like you to consider, and I offer it rather than pressing it.

You know things about him now that you could not know at nineteen. You know what it is like to come in at the end of that kind of day. You know what he was carrying.

That is not a punishment. That is the only route there has ever been to understanding a man like that, and most sons never get it.

You have been given a way of knowing him that most men never get, and standing where your father stood has never once been the same as being trapped where he was. The Holy Spirit is the one who turns a heart back, and Malachi 4:6 puts that turning at the very end of everything.

Take it, and say his name out loud

So the assignment, and there is an extra piece to it for you.

Take the shift, and tell one person plainly what you are doing and why. Malachi 4:6 turns the heart of the children back to their fathers, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is present while a man says out loud what he has taken on.

And when you tell them, say his name in the sentence.

I am doing what my dad did. That is the sentence, and it is going to be hard to get out, and it is the whole exercise.

You are able to say his name in the same breath as the work, and naming a father out loud has never once been the same as admitting a defeat. The Spirit of God is the one who is present when a heart turns, and the written word ends a whole testament on that turning.

And if he is still alive, tell him. Not as a confession. Just as a fact, said to him directly, and then let whatever happens happen.

You are able to say one sentence to your own father, and a plain fact said to a man has never once been a lesser thing than a speech. The Holy Spirit is the one who is in that room, and it is written in Malachi 4:6 that the turning goes in both directions.
