It was Sam. Or Jess. Somebody you have known since school.
They needed the thing done, and you did it, properly, and you gave them a price because they insisted on one, and that was seven weeks ago.
And now there is a thing in the friendship that was not there before, and it is in every message either of you sends, and neither of you has mentioned it.
You are allowed to ask a friend for what they owe you, and a plain question has never once been the thing that ended a real friendship.
I want to name the actual fear, because I do not think it is the money.
The fear is that if you ask, the friendship changes into something with money in it, and once there is money in a friendship it never entirely goes back.
That fear is not silly. Something is genuinely at risk here and it is not the amount.
But here is what I would put beside it, and I want you to look at it honestly.
The friendship already has money in it. That happened seven weeks ago. The money is in there right now, and the only thing your silence is protecting is the pretense that it is not.

A man mine equal, my guide, and mine acquaintance
There is a psalm where David is describing being wounded, and the specific thing that makes it unbearable is who it came from.
But it was thou, a man mine equal, my guide, and mine acquaintance. (Psalm 55:13, King James Version)
A man mine equal, my guide, and mine acquaintance.
Three descriptions, piling up, because one was not enough. Equal. Guide. Acquaintance. He keeps naming the closeness because the closeness is the injury.
You are looking at a psalm that takes the closeness seriously as the reason it hurts, and being let down by a friend has never once been treated there as a small version of being let down. Psalm 55:13 says a man mine equal, my guide, and mine acquaintance, and the Holy Spirit is the one who kept all three descriptions rather than one.
And here is something important about that psalm for your situation.
He says it. Out loud. The whole psalm is him naming exactly what happened and who did it and how it felt, in front of God, without softening a word of it.
He does not pretend it was fine.
You have permission to say the true thing about a friend, and naming a hurt accurately has never once been disloyalty in that book. The Holy Spirit is the one who preserved a psalm that does exactly that, and it is written in Psalm 55 with the friend named rather than protected.
The silence is what changes it
Now let me be concrete about what is actually happening to the friendship, because the direction of it is almost certainly backwards.
You believe asking would introduce a change. The change has already happened and it was introduced by the silence.
Think about the last three times you messaged them. Was there anything in it. A slight care about tone. A thing you did not say. A conversation that did not go where it would have gone a year ago.
That is the change, and it has been running for seven weeks.
You are watching a friendship change and calling the silence the thing that is protecting it, and seven weeks of not mentioning something has never once left a friendship where it was. The written word names a friend plainly as the one who did it, and the Spirit of God is the one who gets a thing said before it hardens.
And there is something about your friend's side that is worth knowing.
They almost certainly know. They are not sitting there having forgotten. They are sitting there knowing, and finding it hard, and not knowing how to raise it either, because the person who owes is usually more stuck than the person who is owed.
So both of you are being careful, in opposite directions, about the same thing.
You have two people protecting the same friendship from opposite ends and both making it worse, and a thing neither person mentions has never once been a thing both people forgot. The Holy Spirit is the one who gets one of the two to speak first, and Psalm 55:13 has the whole matter said out loud rather than carried.
One plain sentence, today
So the assignment, and the wording for a friend is slightly different and I will give it to you.
Send the message asking for it, today, in one plain sentence.
The work, the date, the ask. One line.
You are able to send one line to somebody you love, and a short plain message has never once been a formal one. The Spirit of God is the one present in a message that is hard to send, and the written word takes the closeness seriously without asking anybody to pretend.
And here is the friend specific part. Say it in your own normal voice.
The mistake people make with a friend is going formal. Suddenly the message sounds like a business, and the formality is what actually damages the friendship, far more than the asking does.
So write it the way you would write anything else to them. Same voice, same shortness, same lack of ceremony. Hey, is there any chance you can sort that out this week.
You are able to ask in your own ordinary voice, and a question that sounds like you has never once turned a friendship into an account. The Holy Spirit is the one who keeps a person sounding like themselves, and it is written in Psalm 55 that the closeness was named rather than hidden.
And whatever they say back, answer it as a friend, because that is what you are and it is what you were before the seven weeks.
So here is what I believe is going out over somebody with four deleted drafts and a friend who owes them.
You are allowed to ask a friend for what they owe you, and a plain question has never once been the thing that ended a real friendship. I am not telling you they pay this week or that it is easy, because I do not know them and this site does not invent endings. Psalm 55:13 says a man mine equal, my guide, and mine acquaintance, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my read on your friendship who kept all three of those words rather than one.
And this, which is the word I actually came with:
You have two people protecting the same friendship from opposite ends, and a thing neither of you mentions has never once been a thing either of you forgot. The Spirit of God gets one of the two to speak first, and it is written in Psalm 55 that the closeness was said out loud rather than carried quietly.
One line. Your own voice. Today.
Declare this over yourself
- Four careful drafts, you have never once sounded like me. Psalm 55:13 says a man mine equal, my guide, and mine acquaintance, so by the Holy Spirit I write one line in my own voice today, in the name of Jesus.
- Seven weeks of silence, you were never protecting anything. The written word names a close friend plainly rather than hiding him, and by the Holy Spirit I ask in the same voice I use for everything else.
- Father, You kept a psalm where a man named his own friend out loud as the one who let him down. Your word says but it was thou, a man mine equal, so by Your Spirit I stop pretending there is nothing in this friendship that needs saying.
