It Is The Shoes

It is not the rent. The rent is handled, or it is being handled, or there is at least a plan with a shape to it.

It is the shoes.

They are too small and she has not said anything about it and that is somehow the worst part, because she has noticed that things are tight and she has started managing you, at nine years old, by not asking.

And a pair of shoes is not a large amount of money. That is what makes this so heavy. A small number is sitting in the way and you cannot get past it, and something about the smallness of it makes the whole thing feel like a report on you.

You are not making too much of this, and a small need has never once been too small to be seen by God.

I want to say the thing about proportion straight away, because I think you have been arguing with yourself about it.

The rent is bigger. Obviously. So the fact that the shoes hurt more looks, from the inside, like a failure to keep perspective.

It is not. The rent is a bill and the shoes are a face. That is the whole difference and it is not irrational at all.

And I am not going to tell you the shoes get bought this week. I do not know your week, and this site does not hand people promises it cannot keep.

Your Father knoweth that ye have need

There is a passage where Jesus talks about clothes for a surprisingly long time, and people usually take the flowers and skip the reason.

(For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things. (Matthew 6:32, King James Version)

Knoweth that ye have need.

Not knoweth about your situation generally. Knoweth that there is a need, and the things He names in that passage are food and drink and clothing, which are exactly the small, daily, unglamorous, face level items that are sitting on your kitchen counter tonight.

You are named in a verse that is specifically about clothes rather than about large spiritual matters, and a pair of shoes has never once been beneath the notice of the Father. Matthew 6:32 says your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need, and the Holy Spirit is the one who kept the list that ordinary.

And there is a word in there I would not want you to walk past. Need.

Not want. Not preference. The verse calls these things needs, out loud, without qualification, and it does not lecture anybody for having them.

You have a need and not an indulgence, and a child's shoes have never once been a thing a parent should be embarrassed about requiring. The Holy Spirit is the one who declines to shame a person over daily things, and it is written in Matthew 6:32 that the Father already knows about them.

Why the small thing cuts deeper

Let me stay with the proportion for a minute, because getting this right will take some weight off.

A large bill is between you and an institution. There is no face on it. You can be behind on it and still be, in your own head, a person who is dealing with something.

A child's shoes are between you and a nine year old who is standing in front of you not asking. There is no institution in that. It is just her, and you, and a thing she needs that is small enough that you feel it should be nothing.

You are not confused about proportion, and a small thing with a face on it has never once weighed the same as a large thing on a statement. The written word puts clothing in the list of what the Father knows about, and the Spirit of God is the one who understands the difference between a bill and a child.

And then there is the part about her managing you, which I suspect is the real injury.

She stopped asking. That is a nine year old doing something protective, and watching a child be protective of you is one of the hardest things a parent goes through, because it rearranges who is holding whom.

You are seeing a child do something loving and reading it as evidence against yourself, and a daughter being careful has never once been a verdict on her mother. The Holy Spirit is the one who reads that behavior correctly, and Matthew 6:32 has the Father knowing about the need before anybody in the house has said a word out loud.

One thing, this week, with your hands

So here is what this site does with a month like yours, and it is not a scheme and it is not a fund.

One line. One thing you could do this week that a person would pay you for.

And I want to name something about the shape of small needs, because it matters here. A small need is closer to reach than a large one. That cuts both ways: it is more painful because it is nearly in reach, and it is also genuinely nearly in reach.

You have a need that sits inside one week of work rather than inside a year of it, and a near thing has never once been a cruel thing to name out loud. The Spirit of God is the one who works inside one ordinary week, and the written word names food and drink and clothing rather than fortunes.

I will not tell you what the thing is. The moment anybody on a site like this names the method, they have started selling, and you have been sold to enough this year.

But you know what people ask you for. You know what you do on a Saturday that somebody two streets over pays somebody else to do.

And plainly, because it belongs here. If this has gone further than shoes, if there have been nights where you thought your daughter would be better off with somebody more capable, that is not true and it is not a thought to keep in a house on your own. Call or text 988, the crisis line, today, and say it out loud to a doctor, a counselor or a pastor you trust.

You are allowed to be held by somebody qualified, and asking for that has never once been a strike against a mother. Matthew 6:32 has a Father who already knows the need, and the Holy Spirit is the one who puts a real human being within reach of a woman standing in a kitchen at night.
