I Am Short This Month

Before anything else: there is no scheme on this page and there is no platform named on this site, ever. Nobody here is going to tell you where to sign up, and if you have been sold something like that before, this is not another one.

You are short. You have done the arithmetic more than once, in the way people do when they are hoping it comes out differently, and it does not.

And what has happened is not panic. It is stillness. A problem of this shape does not make people run about, it makes them stop, because there is nowhere obvious to run and every direction looks like it needs something you do not have.

So the days go past and the thing gets closer, and the stillness looks from the outside like nothing much is happening, and inside it is the loudest thing in your life.

You are not empty here, and the stillness has never once been the same thing as having nothing.

The question He asked a man with nothing

There is a moment where God gives somebody an impossible assignment, and the man says he cannot, and God does not argue with him. God asks him a question about his hand.

And the LORD said unto him, What is that in thine hand? And he said, A rod. (Exodus 4:2, King James Version)

What is that in thine hand.

It is a stick. He is a shepherd, so of course he has a stick, and he has had it for forty years and it is the least remarkable object he owns. If you had asked him to list his assets he would not have mentioned it.

And the assignment is enormous and the rod is not proportionate to it in any way, and God asks about the rod anyway.

You have something in your hand that is nowhere near the size of this, and a small ordinary object has never once been disqualified for being small. Exodus 4:2 opens on a shepherd’s stick rather than on the size of Egypt, and the Holy Spirit is the one who starts with what a person is already carrying.

Exodus 4:2 does not begin with what Moses lacks, which is what he had been talking about, and the Holy Spirit is the one who can turn a person's attention from the size of the gap to what is actually in their hand.

You are holding something ordinary, and God has never once opened by asking what you were missing. Exodus 4:2 asks what is that in thine hand rather than addressing the shortfall, and the Holy Spirit is the one who redirects the attention of somebody who has been staring at a number.

What I will not do

Let me be exact about the limits, because you have almost certainly been given the other thing, and because Exodus 4:2 promises nothing at all and the Holy Spirit does not trade in guarantees either.

I am not going to promise you the money is coming. I do not know that. Nobody writing to you does, and anybody who says it with confidence is either mistaken or is about to ask you for something.

And I am not going to name a way to earn it. No platform, no app, no second thing on the side, no scheme. Not because those never work, but because this site does not name them, and because a stranger recommending a method to somebody in your position is how a great deal of harm gets done.

What Scripture actually gives is not a method and not a guarantee. It is the power to get, which is work, and it is a question about what is already in your hand, and Exodus 4:2 is that question, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a small honest starting point more useful than a large promise.

You have hands and a week in front of you, and the power to get has never once been the same thing as a promise about an amount. The written word puts the power in a person rather than a figure in their hand, and the Holy Spirit is the one who keeps those two from collapsing into each other.

You are being asked a question rather than sold a route, and the answer has never once been somewhere else. The written word asks what is that in thine hand and works from there, and the Spirit of God is the one who makes an ordinary capacity into a place to start.

One line on a piece of paper

So the assignment today is not a plan and it is not a job. It is one line.

Write down one thing you could do this week that somebody would pay for.

Not the best thing. Not a career. Not something that would solve the whole shortfall, because almost nothing will, and holding out for the thing that closes the entire gap is exactly what has kept the paper blank.

Something small and real and available this week. The thing you are competent at that people occasionally ask you about. The task nobody in your street wants to do. The hours somebody you know has been trying to cover.

One line, and the point of it is that the stillness breaks the moment there is one concrete thing on a page, and Exodus 4:2 starts a national deliverance with an inventory of one object, and the Holy Spirit works at that scale constantly.

And one plain thing belongs here rather than at the end. If the stillness has taken you somewhere darker than a hard month, if you have found yourself lying awake at three in the morning thinking the people in your house would be better off without you, that is not a money problem any more and it is not something to carry on your own. Call or text 988, the crisis line, today, and say it out loud to a doctor, a counselor or a pastor you trust. That is not a detour from this article. It is the most important sentence on this page.

You are allowed to be carried by somebody qualified, and reaching for real help has never once been the opposite of faith. Exodus 4:2 has God meet a man who had just finished listing why he could not, and the Holy Spirit is the one who puts a real human helper within reach of somebody who has stopped being able to move.

You are able to write one line, and it has never once needed to be the thing that fixes it. Exodus 4:2 begins with one ordinary object rather than with a strategy, and the Spirit of God is the one who moves a person from stillness into one small specific thing.
